The carnival in Cirigliano is a very ancient cultural tradition in which, holy and profane mix together. The show consists in an oral representation, by some local people, of the months of the year and of the four seasons, that is the oral account of the rural works and of the village tradition occurring each year.
So, among paper streamer and “rafanata”, confetti and home-made pasta, there is the ”parade” of the white January, the happy April, the generous June, the sad November, accompanied along the streets of the village by the sound of “Cupa-cupa”, a home-made musical instrument.
The feast ends in a particular procession: a man, covered with talc powder and flour, lays in a coffin to represent the “dead” carnival that is to say the end of the carnival period. At the end of the procession, a straw puppet is burnt to symbolize the end of this goliardic period and the beginning of Lent. |
